March 31, 2022It is a migratory bird that inhabits the Iberian Peninsula, North Africa, a large part of Europe and Asia.
The hoopoe is a very showy bird. It has a cinnamon-colored chest and head and its wings and tail have black and white stripes, however, what stands out the most about this bird is its cinnamon-colored crest topped with black plumes bordered with white.
It is found in almost the entire Iberian Peninsula, except in the Cantabrian strip where it is scarcer, in the Canary and Balearic Islands. It inhabits meadows, scrub solanas with dense trees, olive groves, grasslands, cattle plains, etc.
Their diet focuses on insect larvae and pupae that are buried or under the litter.
Their breeding season begins in mid-May. Once they have found a hole in a tree, a wall or an abandoned building, both members of the couple begin to clean the interior of the nest, to build a nest of leaves and herbs.
The female usually lays between 7 and 10 eggs that incubate between 17-20 days. It is the female who is in charge of feeding the young with the food that the male brings. In late July, early August the young usually leave the nest.
